The Dark Side of the Moon concept album is launched in 1973
Ground-breaking use of progressive technical sound engineering
Original members of Pink Floyd: Syd Barrett, Nick Mason, Roger Waters, Richard Wright
David Gilmour joins the group in 1967 and Syd Barrett leaves in 1968
The recording environment was dark to feed creativity, and contributed to the dark lyrics
Studio album is recorded over 2 years with the working title ‘Eclipse’ at Decca Studios (Hampstead-1972), Rolling Stones Victorian warehouse studio (Bermondsey-1972), and Abbey Road Studios (London-1972-73).
Two songs used to promote album were “Us and Them” and “Money”
Album scheduled for release in March 1973, is preceded by a press reception in February, but band doesn’t show up since they felt the album wasn’t ready yet. The press listened to the album with cardboard cut-outs of the band members on a low-quality PA system.
Controversy with credits and compensation for the song “The Big Gig in the Sky” with singer Clare Torry. She wanted credit for co-composing and sued them 30 years later. Settled out of court.
Original pressing has an error in the credits for the assistant sound engineer: “Peter Jones vs Peter James”
Alan Parsons was a big part of the sound engineering for the Dark Side of the Moon and was nominated for a Grammy for his work on the album.

The Dark Side of the Moon remained in the Billboard Top-200 for 736 non-consecutive weeks between 1973 and 1988.
